I used this book ten years ago to study for the ABSITE was very pleased. I am very disappointed with the current edition. There are many typographical errors suggesting poor editing. The question and answer format is very difficult to figure out if they are looking for one or more answers. I would recommend the book as a very basic guide to get used to taking a test but I would no longer hold it as an authority. Many answers will require extensive cross referencing to validate.

This book will be extremely valuable to any general surgery resident–it addresses a wide range of general surgery and surgical subspecialty topics, contains hundreds of multiple choice questions, and provides need-to-know information with clear explanations. I recommend it as the primary source for in-training review and board exam review.

  3. David Graham Says:

Highly recommended for any general surgery resident, both for studying to increase your knowledge base during residency as well as preparing for boards after you graduate. Each chapter has a series of multiple choice questions that are immediately followed by answers and a few paragraphs discussion. I found this didactic format most helpful.

  4. Julie A. Rizzo Says:

good review for absite because the questions are harder. do not really appreciate the multiple choice questions that have more than one answer correct. great explanation of answers, both right and wrong ones, using pertinent information assumed in the question. best way to use this as a younger resident is to read and gain valuable information, especially in the earlier questions of each chapter, rather than bogging yourself down with trying to answer the multiple-multiple more than one answer correct questions.

I would say that for my intern year, this book helped a lot to study the significant topics. It is a good tool to have for the ABSITE, more comprehensive than just a regular Q&A book.
